Testimony Tuesday: Grace and Mercy

This video is a horrific account of the pain and torment caused to one precious girl as a result of the sinfulness and depravity of man. As I watched it last night, my heart broke for her as I began to fume with anger and disgust towards the men and women who forced her to live through this hell. That was when it hit me—apart from Jesus Christ, that is me. Praise Him for His grace and mercy that are lavished upon us as we approach His throne with boldness in our time of need.

It is so easy for me to forget who I am apart from Jesus Christ. How often I forget to recall just how unworthy I am--how hopeless I am--how depraved I am apart from Him. Here I am, a twenty-year old college student, intern for a non-profit, part of a discipleship program, surrounded by precious friends and family who love me. I love the Lord with all of my heart. I want to devote my life to fighting for enslaved, trafficked, and underprivileged women. I have dreams and visions. I love to serve and bless others. I know that apart from God's abundant and gentle grace and mercy in my short life, this is not where I would be at right now. But in His faithfulness, here I am...right?

In all reality, I am desire to be identified with all of these characteristics...smart, giving, sweet, helpful, selfless, loving, devoted, steadfast...and yet it is so rare that my flesh behaves in a manner worthy of such descriptions. I have to stinking nail my flesh into submission to even begin to possess these qualities much of the time. No, all the time. It rarely comes naturally, though I would often like to believe it does. I mean, I'm a pretty good person…right?

WRONG. Really, I'm not. No one ever had to teach me how to lie...to not share...to talk back to my parents. There's really nothing good in me. I am capable of anything and everything.

I easily lavish mercy and empathy upon victims of human sex-trafficking, itching to take her hands in mine, get uncomfortably close to her face, glaring directly into her eyes to tell her that she is loved intimately, selflessly, unconditionally, forever by the Almighty Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To shake her and tell her He is enough...that He is the ONLY way to freedom. That He can save her, redeem her, and cleanse even her deepest wounds. To tell just tell her that she is forgiven and free. It is glorifying...it is powerful...it makes sense.

What doesn’t make sense is that I would behave in the same manner to share the gospel with the man who abused his little girl all those years, with the mom who sold her niece to feed the family, with the owner of the brothel from which the victim was rescued, with the lost cop who forgot about the 12 year old tied to the bed downstairs when offered an hour with her for free. Have I forgotten the depth of Christ's love for us sinners? Can I not remember that apart from Him, I am capable of making the same decisions? The craziest part of it all is that I continue to find myself battling some of the very same issues as the individuals whom I peg as the ‘worst of the worst’ sinners…as if there are some sins less bad then others.

Without Jesus that is who I am...consumed by wounds from past abuse, addicted to pornography, enslaved to an eating disorder, and ready to give up on life. I am so far from perfect that I wouldn't recognize perfection if it hit me on the head. Recently, the desire to go back to some of those old ways has reared its hideous head once again. As I continue to trudge my way through the battle, I am graciously reminded of my sick, ugly, incomprehensible depravity in this flesh. And yet, this painful realization and confession brings me to the throne of grace with boldness, for He suffered in every way that we do, yet was without sin.

Hebrews 4:14-16 says, "Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need."

Wow. This means He not only sees me and knows me, but He can empathize with my hurt and fleshly desires. In the midst of my complete depravity, I don’t have to feel condemned and ridden by guilt from my choices. Instead, I get to approach Christ with confidence because I KNOW that He does not convict me of guilt nor shame, but of my righteousness…my right-standing with Him. I am learning that nothing compares to falling into His mercy and grace in my time of need. And this very same mercy and grace in which He lavishes upon me in my fleshliness and sinfulness is the exact same grace and mercy He offers to all who believe that Jesus is the way, the Truth and the life—even the abuser, the addict, the brothel owner, the pimp, and the murderer. I am in need of His grace and mercy just as much as they are.

A Sweet Wedding

So on Saturday night I got to celebrate the marriage of my precious roommate and her husband. Heather and Drew starting courting and were engaged in a matter of weeks! What a blessing it was to be able to watch the whole process up close and to see God's faithfulness and perfect timing in bringing them together the way He did.

I can remember their first date...Heather really wasn't even sure she wanted to go that night! I was at a conference that night and rushed home anxious to get all the details on how it went before she went to bed. I was shocked to walk into our apartment well after 10pm to find out that she wasn't even home yet! For Heather, this is a big deal...she's pretty mindful of maintaining her 10 o'clock bedtime. I did a few things and settled down with a book on the couch. FINALLY I heard the key turn in the door.

She walked in with this giddy smile on her face and I knew in that moment he must have been pretty great, considering she wasn't even wanting to go in the first place. I asked a million questions until she shut her door on me and went to bed! She just kept saying in her sweet little girly voice, "I just really like him." It was clear that he was serious about pursuing her and that they had a lot in common--especially their love for Jesus Christ. This was just the first of many dates to follow in the weeks to come. I would say after about 2 weeks I knew this was the man the Lord had set apart for her and it was just a matter of time. I started placing bets on how long it would take him to pop the question. Turns out, I overestimated just a bit.

It was a Friday night and I headed home from work around six. I walked into the apartment and I see all of these flowers everywhere. As my eyes continue to move upwards, there's Drew sitting at our counter. This wasn't unusual though--they were doing something together most nights at this point. I said Hi as usual and walked towards my room. Then Heather walks out of her room with this weird look on her face--half elated and half speechless. As I looked up at her, I couldn't help but smile...why was she being so weird?

"Heyyyy. What are you two up to tonight?" I asked as I paused outside of my bedroom.
"Well," she began, "we're gettin' marrrrried!"

Honestly, I looked at her and smiled, rolling my eyes.
"Yeah right. Very funny." I murmured as I walked into my room to put my stuff down.

See, Drew and Heather have a history of taking advantage of my gullibility and I was determined not to fall for their joke this time.

I walked back out, Heather standing awkwardly in the kitchen and Drew just sitting at the countertop. I looked at him, straight in the eyes. "You're joking, right? I'm NOT falling for it this time! Nice try though."

As I walk into the kitchen and gaze more closely at Heather, it hit me; she is not kidding. It was funny because looking back I don't even think we said anything to each other in the moments to follow--as soon as I really looked at her, it hit me that she was serious. I started screaming and hugging her, begging for details. Shocked does not begin to describe what I was thinking--completely at a loss for words really. It hadn't even been three months since they had gone on that first date to get coffee!

Turns out, Drew had just proposed minutes before and they hadn't told anyone yet! Over that weekend, I watched Heather go into full wedding planning mode! They decided the big day would come not even two months later! After marrying in an intimate ceremony with family on June 26th in Napa Valley, CA, Heather and Drew had a huge reception this past weekend for all of their family and friends to join them in this celebration.

On Saturday, we all gathered to share in this beautiful celebration of two becoming one. Unlike most wedding receptions I have been to, Heather and Drew chose to have the reception to celebrate their marriage, but more importantly to share the gospel. Drew shared their story and then the man who married them, Kevin, shared a bit about the ceremony and their vows. Finally, a pastor from a local church here in Fayetteville preached a brief but impactful message about biblical marriage.

He emphasized to the men that as a husband, it is important to remember that this woman with whom you wed is only your wife here on earth. Scripture reminds us that our time here on earth is like the blink of an eye in comparison to eternity in heaven. He continued by explaining that the way a husband respects, cherishes, provides for, loves, and leads his wife on this earth is of huge importance because ultimately a man must think of his wife as his sister in Christ, more then anything else.

"Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her." Ephesians 5:25

That just as a man would love, honor, protect, and value his sister he is responsible for doing the same for this woman to whom he is wed. Though they are only united by a covenant bond, there will come a day when he approaches the throne and comes before the Lord He will present this woman before the Lord, having protected her, loved her, pointed her to Christ, cleaved to her through it all. He will never leave her. What a picture of what Christ has done for us. And what an incredible gift that a marriage submitted beneath the headship of Christ enables a husband to present his wife as his sister in Christ, beloved, protected, and kept pure in her time on this earth. What a responsibility a man has as a husband!

He also touched on Song of Solomon and pointed out what a beautiful picture it is that in the midst of this sinful world...while we are living on this earth amidst so much junk, the Lord allows us to see through a book like Song of Solomon that man and woman still get to enjoy pleasuring in one another as husband and wife...that there is JOY in marriage, that is so much more then getting through it til death does you part, so much more then dinners and fights and babies and grandkids...the Lord allows these two people to come together and ENJOY one another, LOVE one another in a way that doesn’t compare to any other earthly relationship. What a blessing godly marriage is.

Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Wilkerson! Thank you for allowing all of us to celebrate alongside you and for sharing the Truth of God's word as it pertains to marriage!

Testimony Tuesday: What am I Missing?

Upon arriving at Cardinal Glennon Hospital, something went off in me as I soon realized I was in fact not going to wake up from this nightmare. This was really happening and there was nothing I could do about it. The smell of sickness and anti-disinfectant flooded my nostrils, causing my stomach to churn in dread. Over the next several hours, I was questioned, poked, and prodded by an overwhelmingly steady flow of doctors, nurses, techs, and treatment teams, not much more then a blur of faces I would soon hope to forget. Eventually I made it through the seemingly endless admission process and was moved a room on the third floor.

After awhile, my head fell back slowly, as the bristly dirty-blonde mess on my head brushed the pillow. I breathed. In and out. In and out. Oddly aware of the way my body was functioning in that moment, I watched as my stomach moved up and down. After a bit, I reached down with one hand. My palm rested on the full of my stomach. Wow, am I really still alive? I watched as my hand moved up and down, up and down with the beat of my heart, consistency of my breathing, it just hit me—I was still alive. As I gazed upon the wall and watched the little hand jump from one dash to the next, my body began to relax.

Tick tock. Tick tock.

I heard the voices whispering back and forth. I could have depicted the whole conversation, word for word. The tone heightened at times, in exasperation, lowered in times of defeat. Eventually, I heard the shuffling of a chair, a jacket maybe. The swing of the door and a clash as it shut. She needed some air. Back and forth they went, for hours. I wasn’t listening though.

Tick tock. Tick tock.

What did it matter anyway? I mean, whatever little plan they were scheming over there, wasn’t going to fix me. Just because it didn’t work this time, do they really think I wouldn’t try it again?

The mind is a crazy thing. There is no guidebook, no map to help you trek through it with. Maybe that’s why I spent so much time lost in mine. Regardless, I had made my mind up about six months ago. I knew what my life had become. I refused to continue to live if this was all my life was going to be forever. Death was the only escape from the hell that had become my reality.

“Well, how are you feeling?” asked Dr. Guerra as she glided into my room as if she owned the place.

“I just took a look at your most recent set of labs and ultrasound results. Your heart is holding up surprisingly well considering all you’ve put it through with the overdose. Unfortunately, your potassium is at a record low and your…” she continued her medical mumbo-jumbo  for a while, telling me all of the reasons I had to stop this behavior and all of the consequences I’d soon face if I didn’t--the most consequential being death.

I honestly didn’t care whether I lived or died, I just wanted it all to go away.  I wanted to be free; I just didn’t know how to stop. This method had become the only way I could cope through day-to-day life.  Just to get that bit of relief; to not have to feel anything for a few moments in time.  This behavior enabled me to feel in control of one thing when everything else seemed so out of control. Seven years had passed by now, since I began struggling. I had willingly given up everything good in my life to follow this addiction, never imagining I could end up in a hospital bed just waiting to die.

My first night in the hospital was spent tossing and turning, constant beeping, distant voices, wailing cries of pain, ceaseless shivering (despite all the layers of blankets) as a result of the bolus, and a lingering fear of accidentally disturbing one of the several needles lodged into my arm and wrists. And then there was the minor disturbance of a nurse coming in every hour round the clock to check my temp and vitals, making sure my heart was still pumping? After a night of more exhaustion then rest, I was woken up at five-o-clock in the morning by a shooting pain in my finger, as the nurse stood beside my bed drawing my blood. This would become my life for the next three weeks.

However, none of this compared to the pain I experienced eating six meals a day. The control I once sought in my seven-year battle with an eating disorder was being pulled away from me and I couldn’t handle it. Despite the fact the my body was on the verge of shutting down as a result of the continual restricting and purging, all I wanted was to be thin and in control, two things the doctors were robbing me of. I felt like no one could understand the pain I lived in.

I knew that when I went back home, I would simply go right back into my old behaviors, the same ones which brought me here. Believe it or not, as the nurses prepared to discharge me a few weeks later, I actually heard two of the nurses making bets on how long it would be before I ended up back here in the hospital. I had tried to stop so many times. With all of my strength, I had fought for my self. For the sake of my family, my friends, my dreams and ambitions, I wanted to stop killing myself. So why did I always go back? For many years, I had battled through this question, wondering where the disconnect was. What was I missing?

Once I realized the strength to fight for my life, to overcome battles and struggles that we all face, did not come from myself or others, I was left pondering—where does it come from? Over the years I have come to learn that strength for true and lasting freedom from any struggle, lies solely in Jesus Christ and an intimate relationship with Him. Deeply contrasted by the more common emphasis on finding one’s ‘inner strength,’ Because humans are sinners, they are always going to mess up and fall short. Rather then looking inside oneself for some sort of greater strength, it’s like there is an answer bigger then oneself, bigger then other people even.

Jesus is bigger then man; He is God! Jesus is the perfect, sinless Son of God; He will never leave anyone or let anyone down. Jesus is not temporary satisfaction, but instead He provides eternal purpose and unspeakable joy. Jesus provides a source of strength incomparable to those in which the world often attempts to implement in overcoming addictions. Hope is not some far-off desire, but an alive and motivating reality that comes naturally in knowing Christ intimately.

Looking back, I never wanted to die, I just didn’t want to live if this was how my life was going to be forever; I was hopeless, purposeless, hurting, broken, and slowly dying. Three years ago, as I lay in that hospital bed waiting to die, I never ever could have imagined I could have the privilege of walking in such freedom and redemption today.

I still don’t know why things happen how they do. I don’t understand why painful things happened to me in my early years that led to years of torment for which I pleaded to end in death. I don’t know why sometimes, days are really hard to battle through and other days are easy.

However, I do know that in my weakness, God’s power is made perfect. I do know that apart from Him, I am just a hopeless sinner in desperate need of a Savior. I do know that I spent seven years of my life chasing death and it is solely by coming to know Jesus as my Lord and Savior that I am living life today. Not just living life, as in surviving or making it through, but experiencing all that life is intended to be! I do know that today I have a purpose and passion to love on other women who are passionately pursing death and to tell them that there is only one way to experience life, but that it is so worth it—that there is no cost too high to pursue Jesus Christ.

“By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked to the reward.” — Hebrews 11:24–26

“Then Jesus said to His disciples, ‘If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.’” — Matthew 16:24

“Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” — James 4:4

    Just Dreaming...

Well, today has been a busy day shopping for supplies and starting to create some cards for my next big adventure...a scrapbooking and card-making business. As I wondered through the asiles of Hobby Lobby today, I felt so incredibly stupid. What am I thinking? I have no clue what I am doing...I know nothing about the legistics of runnig or promoting a business! At this point I've decided I must be crazy.

Not to mention the broken record playing over and over in my head these days...
You are crazy; do you really think people will pay money for this? I know people love when you make them things, but they have to say that, after all the work you put into it. Come on, anyone can scrapbook. You don't know anything about business. You are investing all this money...you might as well just throw it in the trash. Not to mention the income you are giving up by not returning to work this fall, to pursue this little dream of yours. You know your mom is right, don't you...you'll never pull this one off; you're just wasting your time and energy.

What a battle my thoughts hve been lately! I know that the Lord has told me to pursue this NOW and if I wasn't 100% sure, I would never have the guts to follow through. I know why now or why this, but I do know that He always does more then I could ever ask or imagine...His plans are better then my wildrest dreams, so here I am plating this little seed of faith, and trusting the Lord will grow it, refine it, shape and mold it to reflect His glory for all to see. This is for you Lord...let me not forget.

I'm just a creater...I love making special, personal things for friends and family. Nothing compares to laboring over a piece for hours, back aching from being hunched over on the floor so long, (I've tried to create at a desk...somehow I always end up on the floor...I tend to spread out rather quickly.) feet completely numb from being in the same position. My worship music, a sermon, or a movie playing quietly playing in the background as it all comes together. Nothing compares to that moment near the end, that moment when you lay down that one little piece of paper, that one little word, that one ribbon--then all of a sudden you just see it like you are looking at this masterpeice for the first time! You just know without a doubt this is it--the final product!

Sometimes I will leave the room for a couple hours just so I can come back in and look at it with fresh eyes...to be captivated by that final creation that somehow came from my hands once again. All I know is that the Lord has given me an incredible gift and passion for scrapbooking that I intend to use only for His glory, that more may hear His name, experience His love, and be changed by an intimate relationship with Him. That is why this business is going to be for-profit with a percentage of that profit going to help underprivalged women both locally and abroad.

I have officially named my new business
    Captivating Creations
which comes from a verse in Isaiah 61, verse 1 which reads,

"The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners."

The Lord gave me this verse several years ago and I have clung to it ever since. I have had dreams and visions time and time again of this verse coming to pass in so many different areas of my life and minsitry. My desire is to see women expereicne freedom in Jesus Christ. I want to see chains broken and lives healed. That the captives may be set free, the prisioners released from the darkness. This is the mission of Captivating Creations--to proclaim freedom to the captives. Specifically, this will be done by giving a percentage of the profit to help women in need. More details will be coming on the specifics as I wait on the Lord to guide and direct the steps to come in this process. The foundation of this business is  creating a product which will sell in order to provide a way for women held captive by various bondage to experience freedom in an intiamte relationship with Jesus Christ, the only one who can restore, renew, and liberate.

Someday, maybe decades, years, or perhps ever months from now my dream come true would look something like this...

Walking through those asiles today all I could think about was how un-professional I really am...I mean I don't have haf the stuff or half the knowledge these srcapbooking pros have, but again in all things I know the Lord has got it under control...little by little. If He gave it to me all at once, I wouldn't know what to do with it all! Step by step, I am just trying to be obedient the the call He has placed on my lfie to pursue this business and to use it to help underprivalged women. So, I will keep fighting through the doubts, fears, and insecurties of stepping out of my comfort zone into something that honestly scares the hebbie jebbies outa me! He is faithful to complete the good work He began until the end...praise Him for this.

Stay tuned for more information and updates about
    Captivating Creations
    in the next few weeks!

    When Grace Flows In

Don’t you just hate it when you’re hanging out with someone, having a great conversation and the next thing you know the words pouring forth from that individual’s lips are like a slap across the face?

Hello, conviction from the holy spirit. For some reason, this happens to me all the time.

I guess the Lord always finds a way to get through my thick coating of depravity as He ever so gently tugs at my heart, shaping and molding it to look more like Him. As I was bike riding with a friend this week, we started talking about my dad. I was frustrated with some things that have been going on in his life recently. As the words were coming out of my mouth, the holy sprit had already begun to pick and prod at my heart. As I finally took a breath after a good long vent of my feelings, I knew she would pounce on my words within moments.

Boy do I hate it when she is right! Especially when it means I am selfish, broken, bitter, and evidentially lacking grace entirely! But I also know that this was a profound moment in my spiritual journey that will leave me coming back to it over and over again. I had expressed great disappointment in my dad returning to some things he had been free from for so long.
With great exasperation, she nailed in hard, “Court, how can you expect him not to fail? I mean, look at you! How long did it take you to stop returning to the same darn things after coming to know Christ? And to think that you struggled with those things for seven years; your dad is only ten months into knowing Christ after living enslaved to something for a solid fifty plus years!”

“The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more.” Romans 5:20

Flood, conviction, flood my selfish, hard heart.

This moment of realizing my inability to shed grace abundantly upon my dad taught me something about myself, in all of my sinfulness. Not only am I hard on myself when I screw up, but I am hard on those around me who fall into the hole as well. I have somehow lost touch with the unspeakable grace which is lavished upon me morning by morning. We kept riding as I thought through some of these strange and unexpected concepts.

As we continued to talk, I realized that the last thing my dad needs from me right now is the hard heart I tend to show him, even when I so desperately desire for him to see my changed heart. All he needs is a gentle pat on the back. He needs me to tell him that it’s okay…I mess up all the time. It really is okay to fail…it really is okay that you’re not perfect, dad. It really is that you’re not perfect, Court!

“You know the generous grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty he could make you rich.” 2 Corinthians 8:9

For so long I have had this thought process about coming to know Christ all wrong. After you give your life to the Lord, one of two things can happen.

1.)    You get saved, then you begin doing good things, not messing up as much as you used to…seems like things are getting easier…like you’re just getting better as time goes by and you grow in Christ. The broken record playing in your head goes something like this: “This is so great…I finally have it mostly together. I was such a mess before I knew Jesus, but now life seems pretty good.” From the cross you are slowly going upward, since keeping it all together will you get you from salvation to heaven. As you get higher and higher upward, becoming more and more capable on your own, the cross gets smaller and smaller.

“But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” James 4:6

2.)    You get saved, then you come to terms with your sinfulness in a sense. You see your sinful nature growing and growing the more time spend on this earth. Even though you know Jesus, you are mindful of your thickening depravity. The broken record playing in your head is something like this: “I was a mess before Christ, but I am more of a mess now. The more I grow and commune with Him, the more I see my sin.” From the cross, you are slowly going downward, since as time goes by you understand your own depravity more and more. As you get lower and lower downward, the cross just gets bigger and bigger.

I want to be mindful of my depravity. I am capable of anything and everything. I could do the unthinkable…the most sick, nasty, ugly, destructive, hurtful sin. That is me apart from Jesus. Lord let me not forget—bind this in my mind and heart. The more I come to know you, the more of a broken sinner I will see. Comparing your perfection and holiness to my brokenness and fleshliness alone should leave me undone.

So no longer will I start my testimony by explaining that several years ago I was a hopeless, broken, hurting and dying young girl consumed in a life of sin but then Jesus changed my life and now I am so much better. No, instead I will speak to the redemptive grace of Jesus Christ in my life day after day after day. I messed up today and I will mess up tomorrow. I don’t want to be going higher if it means the cross is getting smaller. God knows I need all the covering of the cross He has to offer! Morning after morning, His mercies are new, and boy is that a picture of His grace in my depravity.

“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Hebrews 4:15-16

    My Bucket List

So one my sweet friends gave me this idea to take a composition notebook and fill it with my dreams, desires, passions, callings, etc. Often times I guess it would be called a “bucket list.” So over the past month or so I have been filling it with all of these things that I desire to do in my life. I just write one on each page and sometimes even draw a little image to go with the written words. It makes it more fun so I can look back and always laugh at my inability to draw! Then after I actually get to fulfill it, I write down the date and how it was fulfilled so to speak.

It is amazing to me how the Lord burdens our hearts for so many different things as believers, and how each one of us can have such drastically contrasting desires and passions and dreams, yet HE created us with those very specific desires, passions, and dreams for a purpose far greater then anything we could come up with on our own…these passions and dreams are given to us that through their fulfillment we may bring HIM glory! If not for this purpose, then why dream of these things? At the end of the day I know that the Lord has birthed even the silliest of these dreams deep within my heart because HE is the maker of all things good and HE desires for us to experience life, life to the full.

I share a few of my own dreams today in hopes that it will challenge you to take some time and ask the Lord to show you the areas which He has burdened your heart. How has He called you…created you really…to serve Him, to love others, to live life as He intended for you to…to live it to the fullest!
